What Canopy Tent Awnings Are For

Canopy tent awnings are just one of the numerous extra features offered by tent manufacturers. These special features are commonly used by campers during the summer months. The main purpose of an awning is to provide shade to those who do not wish to spend too much time inside the tent. It keeps the threshold dry, protects the occupants from the UV rays of the sun and also adds extra space to the camping shelter.

Canopy tent awnings, being mostly designed for summer camping, are not usually made of waterproof materials or thick fabrics that can withstand strong winds. Instead, they are of light materials and function only as an extension of the main tent or as shade that protects occupants against the glare of the sun. Some brands have awnings as part of the product set, while others offer this material as an optional feature. Some campers do not bother with actual awnings, but instead, they use additional poles to convert fabric doorways into these.

One of the companies that offer tent awnings is the Denver, Colorado-based firm, Davis Tent and Awning. Most of the company’s wall tents are marketed with optional awnings. They can be incorporated with the rain fly or bought separately. A host of other companies offer these materials as part of their product line. But other firms, while not known for manufacturing these features, have designed their tents to allow awnings to be attached to them in case the buyer decides to have one. Albion Canvas Co., a maker of geodesic domes, has designed some of its products in such a way that awnings can be attached to the front of the dome. The main purpose is to extend the space and provide added protection to the doorway. An example of this is the firm’s 18-feet 2v dome model.

Kelty, on the other hand, has designed some of its rainflys like an awning. These rainflys do not offer full coverage and are manufactured to be used mainly in warm, dry weather. The advantage of this awning-like rainflys is that they provide good ventilation and have a number of mesh panels. Like Kelty, Coleman also offers tents with awning-style features. One example is the brand’s Krypton 2 Tent. This four-season, backpacking tent has awning-style vents on each door to provide ample ventilation.

Canopy tent awnings are mostly used for summer camping. They are designed to provide additional space to the main tent and offer shade to campers who prefer to sit outside and enjoy the view.
