The Festive Cheer Provided by a Circus TentA circus tent is one of the better known examples of large canopies. It usually has one or more circular arenas surrounded by seats arranged in tiers which can accommodate thousands of people. Most modern circus canopies are made of polyester or vinyl fabrics and are structured using cranes. Circus shelters are adorned with multiple, bright colors; a feature that is much appropriate since the structures are designed for festivities and cheerful activities. Although most circuses have been having their performances indoors, there are still shows that travel under canopies around the world. A circus tent can be of smaller sizes or big, hulking shelters. The smaller canopies are usually of push-pole types. These smaller shelters are erected by simply pushing the poles under the canvas to give them the shape and structure that they need. Some bigger tents, on the other hand, need bale rings to be set up. A bale ring tent used in circuses is erected using metal or wooden stakes that are driven into the ground around the area of the canopy. The canvas or roof fabric is unrolled and separate sections are then stitched together on the ground using ropes fastened to stakes. The center pole is then raised and secured with guy lines. The canvas is fastened to metal rings (bale rings) and hoisted up using the pulleys on the center poles. Sidewalls and canvas panels are fastened around the perimeter of the main tent to enclose the structure. In some cases, a marquee or entrance tent is attached to serve as canopy for the entering public. One of the most popular providers of these circus canopies is the Dutch company, De Boer. The firm offers star and rainbow tents; so-called for their colorful designs and festive features. These canopies come in three models; the oval tent which measures 36 by 46 meters, the Star Show Tent measuring 44 by 44 meters and the Rainbow tent which has a permanent width of 33 meters but can be extended with segments of eight meters. Canopies for circuses, like the ones offered by De Boer, give a festive atmosphere due to their colorful walls and panels and their size. A circus tent is not just a shelter meant to accommodate the thousands of spectators who wish to enjoy a spectacular show; it also serves as reminder of the happier times of every adult’s younger years. After all, what childhood will be complete without at least one trip to the circus? |
