Tips on Cleaning Tent Trailer and Maintaining Other Canvas Camping Gear

Summer is the time for camping and outdoor exploration; but after the summer months, camping supplies and equipment are put into storage to be used again next year. But before these materials are put into storage, owners should remember that cleaning tent trailer, canopies and other canvas materials is a must if you want your gear to be as good as new by next camping season. 

Cleaning tent trailer and maintaining other canvas camping gear might sound like boring work, but it is something that should be done to avoid the materials from falling apart and make them last longer than they would have if they are stored without tending to them first. To guide you on how to go about it, here are some tips.

Tent trailer, or any canvas material for that matter, should not be stored without cleaning it first. Being cooped in a dark, airless atmosphere will cause them to decay; molds, mildew and other unwanted organisms are likely to make a home out of canvas materials if they are stored dirty and even a little damp. The best way to prolong the life of your camping gear is to prevent any of these organisms from growing in them. Prevention is still the best way to take care of your supplies.

After camping, the canvas material of your trailer should be aired first before being stored. Clean it with water and a commercial grade disinfectant that can be bought from janitorial supplies shops. Avoid using cleaning compounds with strong chemical ingredients since the chemicals can destroy the cloth and can later be toxic to users. Make sure that the materials are completely dry before storing them into a dry, cool place.

If mildew and mold have already set in, use a solution made of two cups of bleach and five gallons of water. Mix and put the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the areas with mold and rub them off and let the solution dry for around ten minutes. Wash the solution off with clean water; it is advisable to use a water hose to get the canvas thoroughly washed. Dry it completely before storing. 

Cleaning tent trailer and other canvas materials might sound like a letdown after spending an enjoyable time using them in the outdoors, but if you want your camping gear to be as good as new come the next summer season, this is the only way to do it. It will also save you a lot of money and effort since you don’t have to buy a new set of camping gear for your next outdoor adventure.
