Darnell Tent, Canvas Shelters and Other Old-Fashioned CanopiesThe introduction of lighter, synthetic fabrics coupled with the development of stand-alone shelters have relegated older models like darnell tent, canvas canopies and other old school tents into the background. Most of these old styles have been totally eradicated from the market while some have been converted and mixed with modern parts. Tents, be it for camping or for parties, have evolved with technology just like almost every type of product. The designs of canopies that are currently offered in the market have made some of the older types obsolete. But what exactly are these older tents like? Most older tent styles are single-skin and are made of canvas fabric. They are much heavier than modern shelters and guy ropes are needed to erect them. The canopies of yesteryears require skill in erecting, they need to be tensioned precisely and positioned exactly as they should be to keep them from falling. These characteristics make the materials highly unsuitable for recreational campers, particularly in the era of pop up tents and light synthetic fabrics. One of the examples of old fashioned canopies is the pup tent. The pup is a smaller version of the ridge tent and it can accommodate two to three people. The roof is of rectangular shape and guy ropes are needed for each pole and each corner. Some models of this tent had a horizontal ridge pole that joins the tops of the end poles to provide support for the tent. Another old tent style is the ridge shelter. Normally, this tent has a single upright pole at each end and a rectangular shape for floors. The ridge sometimes features an additional upright pole in the center to help support the structure. Guy ropes at each corner and every two feet along the sides are also common among ridge tents. A square center-pole tent, another forgotten canopy style, is designed for family use. It uses nine poles and 12 guy ropes and skill is needed to erect it. Five-foot high poles are used in each corner and in the middle of each side. The square-shaped floor can range from eight to 15 square feet. The walls are vertical and the roof is pyramid-shaped, providing plenty of headroom to its occupants. Old fashioned tents like darnell tent, canvas-roofed canopies and heavy fabrics are things of the past. Most of these types of shelters are not available anymore and they are used only by those who wish to remember the old days and are refusing to adopt modern camping practices. |
