Dome Geodesic Tent: Unusual Shape, Adaptable FeaturesA dome geodesic tent is so-called for its spherical or ball-like shape. It has rounded roofs and has no sharp angles; it is the kind of tent designed in a continuous, curved shape. Geodesics are known for their strength and adaptability. This type of tent is offered in various sizes but most are bigger than traditional tents since they are used more in big events like parties and trade shows. Campers also sometimes use a dome geodesic tent for shelter, but this rounded canopy can be seen mostly in places where large gatherings are held. Geodesics can also be used as greenhouses, disaster relief shelters, concert venues (usually a half-sphere structure that provides overhead shelter to the performer but gives a full view to the audience) and other non-traditional functions where ordinary camping tents cannot be used. This type of tent is stronger than traditional canopies since its shape, which does not rely on corners and sharp angles, allows it to concentrate stresses and provides the highest ratio of enclosed volume to weight. The idea of designing a tent with a spherical shape was taken from actual geodesic architectures which started in the 1940s when Buckminster Fuller and his colleagues from Black Mountain College developed the first geo-like structures. The structure of a geodesic is comprised of a network of triangles that form a spherical surface. According to Fuller, the more complex the network of triangles is, the closer the structure adopts the shape of a true sphere. The weight of geo structures is evenly distributed throughout the series of triangles, providing an even, stable structure with a maximized space that requires the least amount of material. The main advantage of these structures is that, the larger they are, the stronger they get. They are also aerodynamic and can withstand strong winds. They are quite easy to put up and do not require too many people and much extra equipment. In terms of disadvantages, the non-traditional shape of geo tents tends to make additional gear storage a problem. Because they have no corners; putting flat, rectangular or square shaped materials inside would mean that a certain space will be unused and wasted since the blocked materials will not completely fit into the rounded interior. But the strength of the structure can make up for its rather disappointing storage function. A dome geodesic tent is not your usual camping tent, but the non-traditional shape of this structure provides users with protection and shelter that is better than the usual camping tent. In terms of big events, the geo canopy is a preferable option; not only because of its strength but also because of its shape which inevitably calls a passer-by’s attention. |
