The Advantages of Large Nylon TentsLarge nylon tents are now commonly sold commercially. Together with polyester canopies, nylon shelters have taken a large share of the tent market; providing stiff competition to traditional canvas or cotton-made tents. These large tents are used as party covers, temporary homes, trade fair shelters, expedition canopies and camping tents for families and groups. Large nylon tents have the advantage of being much lighter than cotton or canvas. They do not absorb much water and are therefore more suitable for heavy weather environments. Some nylon-type shelters are coated to make them waterproof. The only disadvantage of this type of large canopy is that, compared with canvas, it deteriorates faster particularly if it’s not maintained properly. The deterioration is often caused by the ultraviolet light of the sun, a natural element that is better controlled by canvas and other tent materials. Two types of large canopies that commonly use nylon fabrics are frame and cabin tents. Frame tents, being mostly double-skinned, have inner tents that are usually made of nylon while the outer cover is usually of canvas or polyester material. Cabin tents, which are mainly used in the United States, are single-skinned canopies that usually have nylon as walls and polyester as roof. Both tents, being bigger than ordinary camping shelters, have total weights that are heavier than other models. Using a nylon fabric somehow prevents the materials from getting too heavy than they need to be. Since nylon tents are less resistant to ultraviolet damage than polyester, a rain fly is often a necessary part of the whole shelter. A rain fly serves as protection over the inner nylon fabric and also helps prevent condensation. Despite being relatively susceptible to ultraviolet rays’ damage, nylon fabrics are less likely to leak when it rains. Those that have polyurethane coatings have a greater advantage in that they prevent water from passing through the cloth; and unlike in canvas materials, water in nylon will not seep through even when touched. Large nylon tents are commonly used in big events like parties, trade fairs and even expeditions. The fabric is less likely to leak, lighter than most materials and is stronger than others despite its minimal weight. To prolong the life of this kind of tent, proper care and maintenance is necessary. But all in all, the advantages of these shelters outbalance whatever negative aspects they have. |
